SURVIVE THE FREEZING COLD

In the coldwinter months ahead it is important to remember what to do in case you are caught in an emergency situation out or indoors. When travelling to and from work in your car carry extra blankets and a sleeping bag in case you get stuck on the side of the road. Include lighter fluid, lighters, flashlights, a radio, batteries, sunscreen, non-perishable food and water in a box next to your first aid kit.

If you get stranded and decide to go for help, in daylight hours you can get sunburned by the snow from the sun's reflection it casts on the skin. You can avoid this by taking along a bottle of sunscreen. Don't forget to put a lighter or two in your pocket when going for help. You might have to build a fire later, preferably before nightfall, if you are stuck out in the boonies.

Always look for the lowest point to bunk down in. If the ground isn't iced over you can dig out a hole to lie in. Be sure to cover your
body with the dug out dirt for warmth. If you come upon a hollowed out log, look inside it first, then crawl in for some shelter from wind, snow or rain.

When looking for twigs or wood to start a fire you might find dry wood under rocks, bushes or in crevices, but before sticking your hand in or under anything make sure nothing else has beaten you there first. You don't want to get bitten by an insect, snake or some other creature, do you? If you are unsuccessful finding dry wood then you'll probably be forced to wait until it dries out. Bringing along a can of lighter fluid comes in handy for pouring over wood that is hard to start. I hope you remembered to carry your sleeping bag with you.

If you find yourself at
home during a winter storm without electricity hopefully you won't have all electric heaters or central heat & air. Keeping at least one gasheater will insure you heat. The gas won't go out because the electricity does. They aren't connected to each other. Flashlights are safer to use than candles when the lights go out but as long as you keep an eye on burning candles they will give you light and some heat. Candles are what I like to call "Free Heat" since the electric and gas companies love to charge high prices
